Study in South Korea

Universities, language options and the student visa

Overview: studying in South Korea

South Korea has a well-developed higher education system, with strong programmes in technology, engineering, business and design and a growing number of English-taught courses. This page gives general guidance only. Always confirm details with the university and with official Korean government sources.

Popular study levels and courses

  • Korean language programmes
  • Bachelor's degrees
  • Master's degrees
  • Doctoral programmes

Admission requirements

Each university sets its own entry requirements. Applicants generally provide academic transcripts and certificates, a passport and a study plan, and many universities also ask for a recommendation letter and proof of funds.

English language requirements

Korean-taught programmes usually ask for proof of Korean ability (often the TOPIK test). English-taught programmes usually accept IELTS, TOEFL or other approved evidence of English. Requirements differ by university and programme.

Application and intake information

Most universities start students in March (spring) and September (autumn). Deadlines vary by university and scholarship, and some close several months before the start date.

Tuition and living costs

Tuition and living costs differ by university and city. Use each university's published fees and official guidance when you plan your budget.

Scholarships and funding

The Korean government's Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) and many university scholarships exist for international students. Eligibility rules and deadlines differ, and no scholarship is guaranteed.

Visa and immigration

International students generally apply for a student visa using an admission letter from the university and proof of funds. The visa type depends on the course, for example degree study or language study. Rules change, so check the official Korean government sources. This page is general guidance, not immigration advice.

Application process

  1. Book a counselling session and share your academic profile

  2. Shortlist institutions and programmes

  3. Prepare documents and proof of language ability

  4. Submit applications and receive offers

  5. Accept an offer and arrange funding

  6. Apply for your visa or residence permit

  7. Plan accommodation, travel and arrival

This page is general guidance, not official immigration or legal advice. Requirements, fees and deadlines change, so always confirm them with the university and the relevant government authority.
