Study in Canada

Universities, colleges and the study permit

Overview: studying in Canada

Canada offers university degrees as well as college diplomas and certificates. Rules for international students, including study permits, are updated by the government from time to time. This page gives general guidance only.

Popular study levels and courses

  • College diplomas and certificates
  • Bachelor's degrees
  • Graduate certificates and master's degrees
  • Doctoral programmes

Admission requirements

Entry requirements depend on the institution and programme. Applicants usually provide academic transcripts and proof of English or French ability, and some programmes ask for a statement, references or work experience.

English language requirements

Many institutions accept IELTS Academic and other approved tests. Minimum scores are set by each institution and programme.

Application and intake information

Many institutions start students in September, January and May, but the intakes available depend on the programme. Check each institution for its deadlines.

Tuition and living costs

Tuition differs by institution, programme and province, and living costs differ by city. Use each institution's published fees and official government guidance to plan your budget.

Scholarships and funding

Scholarships are offered by institutions and other organisations, each with its own eligibility rules. We help you look for options you may qualify for. Funding is never guaranteed.

Visa and immigration

Most international students need a study permit and an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI). Requirements, including financial proof and any provincial requirements, change often, so check the official Government of Canada website. This page is general guidance, not immigration advice.

Application process

  1. Book a counselling session and share your academic profile

  2. Shortlist institutions and programmes

  3. Prepare documents and proof of language ability

  4. Submit applications and receive offers

  5. Accept an offer and arrange funding

  6. Apply for your study permit

  7. Plan accommodation and travel

This page is general guidance, not official immigration or legal advice. Requirements, fees and deadlines change, so always confirm them with the university and the relevant government authority.
